This is a house I found accidentally while driving along Atlanta Rd near Seaford, Delaware. I wanted to get a closer look at the interesting abandoned looking house, but I was unsure if it was private property, but I noticed the historic marker and I figured I’d check it out, I’m so glad I stopped.
Could this be one of the houses described in the Entailed Hat? This is the oldest standing brick structure in western Sussex County, built in the early 18th century, the date is still inscribed on one of the original bricks by the front door. Many of the standing 18th century buildings around Delmarva have a similar brick pattern, alternating red brick with darker glazed brick.
Were the bricks made on site? Looking at the red clay soil on the property and the fact that transporting bricks to rural Delaware in the 18th century would be costly and time-consuming, it is probable.
One of the window panes was broken, so I was able to record a quick video of the interior.
Saved from Development
I will report back when I have more information, I know this house will be restored and the property was saved from developers in order to protect our history. I prefer to take “before” photos, being able to see the original bones of an old house along with the time worn remnants of the past will always make my nerdy heart stop.
